I don't believe Leslie Bailey has ever met a holiday she doesn't like and that seems to go double for Halloween! The first year she was at Marengo, she organized a Halloween musical showcase of community talent that she called Halloween Hullabaloo. The show was performed at the CME Church which is located directly across the road from Marengo. The church was built in 1830 and is currently owned by the Lowndesboro Landmarks Foundation (as is The Marengo House). Of note is the fact that the steeple on top of the CME Church is the original dome from the first State Capitol building located in Cahawba, Alabama. The photos that follow were taken at the church during rehearsals as well as at Marengo. Silver Spoon Caterers prepared a pre-show dinner, and after the dinner, the guests walked over to the church for the performance. As we walked along in the dark on the dirt road from Marengo to the church, little did we know that Leslie had arranged for a local equestrian to come riding toward us on horseback, winding her way through the pecan grove on the property. Dressed in a gauzy, tattered costume that flowed gracefully behind her as she rode, the sight of this "apparition" took us completely by surprise and was a perfect prelude to the Halloween-themed performance that followed.
Photos were taken 13 Oct 07 (rehearsal) and 30 Oct 07 (dinner and performance).
